Simulation Studies | (MSSD) Carnegie Mellon University
Tools: Rhino, Grasshopper, Climate Studio & Ladybug Plugins| Type of Work: Teamwork
This study aims to be able to conduct a set of manual parametric analyses using the computational tools (Rhino-Grasshopper ClimateStudio with EnergyPlus engine) by varying physical (geometric) and thermo-physical properties of building components and systems and evaluate subsequent effects on the thermal performance of an architectural space. Further, “spatial comfort analysis” was used for quantification and graphical representation of occupants’ thermal comfort in indoor building spaces.

Building Case Model in Los Angeles
In this assignment, we explored the thermal properties of the assigned office unit located in Los Angeles. For thermal performance simulation, the model is constructed by separated surfaces instead of a close polysurface. We mapped the hourly temperature analysis, spatial thermal comfort analysis, hourly heat gains and losses, and hourly heating & cooling energy analysis. Then we carried whole building performance analysis for the baseline building. From these baseline settings, we did design iterations for a mechanical system with various COPs to find the most suitable heating-cooling system.
